Biennial Scientific Conference

The ASEE Biennial Scientific Conference serves as the cornerstone Pan-African platform bringing together ecological economists, natural resource scientists, environmental policymakers, and community leaders across Sub-Saharan Africa. Held in rotation across the continent's diverse eco-regions, the conference provides a rigorous forum for presenting cutting-edge research on climate adaptation, natural capital accounting, and resource governance.

Key highlights include high-level keynote addresses from global and African thought leaders, interdisciplinary paper presentations, policy roundtables, and special sessions dedicated to integrating traditional ecological knowledge into modern economic models. The conference also acts as a launching pad for collaborative research projects and coordinates African contributions to the global ISEE World Congress.

Capacity Building Workshops & Summer Schools

Recognizing the urgent need for technical expertise in ecological economics across African academic and policy institutions, ASEE organizes intensive capacity-building workshops and summer schools. Designed specifically for early-career scholars, graduate students, and civil servants, these workshops deliver hands-on training in advanced analytical tools and transdisciplinary methodologies.

Participants gain practical experience in non-market ecosystem service valuation, bio-economic modeling, input-output natural capital accounting, and multi-criteria decision analysis. Led by international and senior African faculty, these programs also offer direct mentorship, helping participants publish in peer-reviewed journals such as Ecological Economics and write competitive research proposals.

Socio-Ecological Field Research & Community Engagement

ASEE’s field research initiatives bridge the gap between academic theory and real-world environmental challenges. By conducting empirical field studies across diverse landscapes—from coastal mangrove ecosystems to arid rangelands and tropical rainforests—our researchers gather critical primary data on ecosystem health, community resource dependencies, and local climate vulnerabilities.

Empowerment and co-creation are central to this research model. ASEE teams work directly with indigenous stewards and local agricultural communities to document traditional conservation practices and evaluate the socio-economic impacts of environmental changes. These findings directly feed into local action plans, national policy briefs, and regional development frameworks.
